Modern Korean Acupuncture (K-Acupuncture) [Part 6] Acupuncture Prescriptions for the Taeyangin Constitution: Geumyang & Geumeum Types

Starting today, we will explore the acupuncture prescriptions for each constitution in the Eight Constitutional system.

We begin with the Taeyangin (太陽人) constitution, the rarest and most unique among the eight.

Taeyangin is divided into two types: Geumyang (金陽體質) and Geumeum (金陰體質). Both share the characteristic of very strong Lung (Metal) energy and weak Liver (Wood) energy.

1. Geumyang Constitution (金陽體質) – Acupuncture Prescription

Organ Strength Ranking
Lung (Metal) > Spleen (Earth) > Heart (Fire) > Kidney (Water) > Liver (Wood)

Core Imbalance
Excessively strong Lung (Metal) energy and very weak Liver (Wood) energy

Basic Formula (Metal-Reducing Prescription, 金瀉方)
According to the Fire-centered Five Element balancing principle, reduce excessive Lung energy and reinforce weak Liver energy to restore constitutional balance.

Main Acupoints

• Tonification Points (補穴):

  • Taiyuan (太淵, LU9) – Strengthens Lung energy

  • Quchi (曲池, LI11) – Clears upper body heat, supports Lung energy

• Sedation Points (瀉穴):

  • Yuji (魚際, LU10) – Cools excessive Lung heat

  • Erjian (二間, LI2) – Subdues Large Intestine energy

Caution
Do not sedate Water points (Shu points) on Kidney (KI) and Bladder (BL) meridians, based on the principle of Water overcoming Metal (水剋金).

Auxiliary Prescriptions

• Exocrine Support (Gallbladder-Tonifying Prescription, 膽補方 – Wood reinforcement):

  • Xuanzhong (懸鍾, GB39), Taichong (太衝, LV3) – For skin inflammation, rheumatism, and other inflammatory conditions

• Endocrine Support (Stomach-Sedating Prescription, 胃瀉方 – Earth reduction):

  • Yinlingquan (陰陵泉, SP9), Zusanli (足三里, ST36) – For intestinal inflammation, degenerative diseases, digestive issues

Examples of Applicable Conditions
Allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, chronic fatigue, muscle cramps

2. Geumeum Constitution (金陰體質) – Acupuncture Prescription

Organ Strength Ranking
Lung (Metal) > Earth > Fire > Water > Wood

Core Imbalance
Similar to Geumyang type with Lung (Metal) dominance, but Liver (Wood) is even weaker and the constitution tends to be cold in nature.

Basic Formula (Wood-Tonifying Prescription, 木補方)
Based on the Fire-centered Five Element principle, reinforce weak Liver energy and reduce excessive Lung energy.

Main Acupoints

• Tonification Points (補穴):

  • Ququan (曲泉, LV8) – Nourishes Liver yin

  • Dadun (大敦, LV1) – Promotes Liver energy circulation

• Sedation Points (瀉穴):

  • Chize (尺澤, LU5) – Subdues excessive Lung energy

  • Sanguan (三間, LI3) – Clears excessive Large Intestine energy

Caution
Do not sedate Water points on Kidney and Bladder meridians.

Auxiliary Prescriptions

• Exocrine Support (Spleen-Tonifying Prescription, 脾補方 – Earth reinforcement):

  • Taibai (太白, SP3), Zusanli (足三里, ST36) – For dermatitis, rheumatism, etc.

• Endocrine Support (Bladder-Sedating Prescription, 膀胱瀉方 – Water reduction):

  • Weizhong (委中, BL40), Taixi (太溪, KI3) – For intestinal inflammation, degenerative diseases

Examples of Applicable Conditions
Liver function decline, eye fatigue, indigestion, sensitivity to cold
