Modern Korean Acupuncture (K-Acupuncture) [Part 7] Acupuncture Prescriptions for Soyang Constitution: Earth-Yang (Toyang) & Earth-Yin (Toeum) Types

Welcome to the second installment in our series on acupuncture prescriptions for each constitutional type.
Today, we explore the Soyang (少陽人) constitution—known for its active and dynamic energy.

The Soyang constitution includes two subtypes:

Both types are characterized by strong Spleen/Stomach (Earth) energy and relatively weak Kidney (Water) energy.
Treatment focuses on modulating excess Earth energy and tonifying deficient Kidney energy.

1. Toyang Type (土陽體質)

Visceral Strength Hierarchy:

Spleen (Earth) > Lung (Metal) > Heart (Fire) > Liver (Wood) > Kidney (Water)

Core Imbalance:

  • Strong Earth (Spleen/Stomach) Qi

  • Weak Water (Kidney) Qi

Basic Formula (土瀉方 | Earth-Draining Formula)

Based on a Fire-centered Five Element principle, this prescription seeks to drain excessive Earth energy and replenish deficient Kidney energy.

✦ Key Acupoints

Tonification (補穴):

Draining (瀉穴):

⚠️ Caution:
Do not drain Metal points (LU, LI meridians), based on the Five Element rule:
Metal overcomes Earth (金剋土)—overuse may cause harm.

Supplementary Prescriptions (부방)

• Exocrine Supplement (Water-Tonifying Formula):

• Endocrine Support (Wood-Tonifying Formula):

  • Ququan (LR8), Yingu (KI10): Applied for digestive inflammation or degenerative disease

• Mental Stabilization (Pericardium Harmonizing Formula):

Example Symptoms:

2. Toeum Type (土陰體質)

  • Tendency to internal damp-heat

Follows a Fire-centered Five Element strategy to tonify Kidney energy and drain excess Earth energy.
