Korean Acupuncture (K-Acupuncture) [Part 8] Acupuncture Prescriptions for Tae-eum Constitution
Modern Korean Acupuncture (K-Acupuncture) [Part 8] Acupuncture Prescriptions for Tae-eum Constitution : Mokyang & Mokeum Types
This is the third installment in our acupuncture prescription series based on the Eight Constitutional Medicine (ECM).
Today, we will explore the Tae-eum (太陰人) constitution—characterized by grounded, persistent energy.
Tae-eum types are divided into:
Mokyang Type (木陽體質 / Wood-Yang)
Mokeum Type (木陰體質 / Wood-Yin)
Both share a strong Liver (Wood) and weaker Lung (Metal) profile.
Thus, treatment focuses on restraining excessive Liver energy and tonifying deficient Lung energy.
1. Mokyang Type (木陽體質)
Visceral Strength Hierarchy:
Liver (Wood) > Heart (Fire) > Spleen (Earth) > Kidney (Water) > Lung (Metal)
Core Imbalance:
Basic Prescription: Metal-Tonifying Formula (金補方)
Using a Fire-centered Five Element framework, this formula strengthens weak Lung (Metal) Qi and controls overactive Liver (Wood) Qi.
✦ Key Acupoints
Tonification (補穴):
Taiyuan (LU9): Strengthens Lung Qi
Quchi (LI11): Clears upper-body heat, supports Lung energy
Sedation (瀉穴):
Xingjian (LV2): Reduces Liver fire
Xiaxi (GB43): Calms excessive Gallbladder activity
⚠️ Caution:
Avoid sedating Earth points (SP, ST meridians), as Earth supports Wood, potentially exacerbating Liver excess.
Supplementary Prescriptions
• Exocrine Supplement (Liver-Tonifying):
Ququan (LR8), Xuanzhong (GB39): For liver-related skin conditions, joint pain
• Endocrine Support (Spleen-Draining):
Shangqiu (SP5), Zusanli (ST36): For diabetes, indigestion, abdominal obesity
• Mental Support (Harmonizing):
Zhongchong (PC9), Quze (PC3): For insomnia, anxiety, depression
Example Symptoms:
Asthma
Obesity
Constipation
Chronic cough
2. Mokeum Type (木陰體質)
Visceral Strength Hierarchy:
Liver (Wood) > Kidney (Water) > Heart (Fire) > Spleen (Earth) > Lung (Metal)
Core Imbalance:
Excessive Liver Qi
Basic Prescription: Wood-Draining Formula (木瀉方)
Employing a Fire-centered Five Element strategy, this formula suppresses Liver excess while enhancing weak Lung Qi.
✦ Key Acupoints
Tonification (補穴):
Taiyuan (LU9), Quchi (LI11): Boost Lung Qi, alleviate upper-body heat
Sedation (瀉穴):
Xingjian (LV2), Xiaxi (GB43): Balance excess Liver and Gallbladder activity
⚠️ Caution:
Do not sedate Fire points (HT, SI meridians), as this may destabilize internal energy in Fire-dominant systems.
Supplementary Prescriptions
• Exocrine Supplement (Kidney-Tonifying):
Taixi (KI3), Weizhong (BL40): For dry skin, edema related to Kidney weakness
• Endocrine Drainage (Bladder-Draining):
Yingu (KI10), Weizhong (BL40): For overactive bladder and urinary issues
• Mental Support (Harmonizing):
Zhongchong (PC9), Quze (PC3): Alleviates anxiety, emotional tension, sleep issues
Example Symptoms:
Hepatitis
Dry skin
